Slow Cooker Yogurt

What a super easy way to make yogurt!!!!  If you don't have a screaming baby to distract you, this couldn't be easier! I was so excited and proud when I lifted my Crock Pot Slow Cooker lid this morning and ran my spoon through my very own, home-made yogurt!  Go me!!!!  It has a really great texture.

For me, it needs sweetening, so I added honey and vanilla.  You could puree canned or fresh fruit and make different flavors.  You could also use agave nectar to sweeten this in a healthy way!

I plan to try this again with Vanilla Almond milk and Coconut Milk when this batch of yogurt is gone!

This is not my recipe.  Here's where I got my recipe from!  What a great site if you have food allergies in your household!

UPDATE:  I tried this with Vanilla Soy Milk and vanilla soy yogurt as my starter and it turned out great!

Slow Cooker Yogurt

Ingredients:
1//2 Gallon Milk (I used Vitamin D) - pasteurized is ok, but not Ultra-Pasteurized!
1/2 cup yogurt (I bought a single serve which is 6 oz. and just ate the remaining 2oz. - from now on you'll have your own starter!)

Directions:
Pour the entire 1/2 Gallon of milk into your Slow Cooker.
Set on LOW and cook foe 2 1/2 hours.

Turn off your Slow Cooker and let it sit for 3 hours.

After the 3 hours, remove 2 cups of the warm milk.
Add 1/2 cup yogurt
Stir.

Add this to your remaining milk in the Slow Cooker and stir.

Cover the Slow Cooker with a heavy towel and let it sit overnight.

The next morning, remove the towel and admire your home-made yogurt!!!!!
Enjoy!

  1. I was just wondering how many ounces of yogurt this makes? Is it as creamy as store bought yogurt, or is it more liquidy?

    1. I'm not sure how many ounces, but it makes about a half gallon of yogurt. It's thinner than store bought. :)

  2. Ok, I am finally trying this recipe! I just put the towel over my crockpot. Curious to see the results in the morning.
    Thanks for the idea!

  3. I just tried this out and am totally thrilled with the results! I make smoothies in the morning and it's perfect for that. It is a little more liquidy than store bought but not too much! Now I just need to find the perfect sweetener to get my 20 month old to eat it since she can't yet have honey. I tried a bit with honey and it was fantastic. Thanks so much!!!

  4. Ho do you continue to have a starter for the next batch of crockpot yogurt you want to make? Do you keep 1/2 cup of the final yogurt and that counts as the starter?

    Thanks.

  5. You can also strain the liquid a bit and have a thicker consistency. Save the whey and add a bit of sweetening and flavoring to it and it's wonderful also!

  6. How thin is this yogurt supposed to be? I tried making it last night and the end result was still a liquid. Is that right or did I go wrong somewhere with it?
