Beef Taco Meat - Walking Tacos

I am SOOOOO thrilled that I can now make Taco Meat in my slow cooker!  And let me tell you this, you do NOT have to brown the meat first. That's right!  You need not dirty any additional pans in your house!!!!!!  I know, right?!!!!  I was doing the happy dance too!  You'll probably never make taco meat any other way again now that you'll know how to make it in your slow cooker!

This is PERFECT for parties!  Recently, we had a Progressive Dinner in our Neighborhood.  It was super fun!  You can read all about it here!  To make a long story short, we hosted the main course at our house of Walking Tacos.  I served the Beef Taco Meat as one of our meat options.  The other meat option I served was Salsa Ranch Chicken with Black Beans.

The Taco meat was incredibly delicious! Best of all, MUCH lower in sodium than just dumping a package of taco seasoning onto your ground beef!  I came up with my own taco seasoning and I think you'll love it!

I hope you try this!  It would be a super fun family meal!

Beef Taco Meat - Walking Tacos

Ingredients:
2 lbs. ground beef
2 tsp. garlic powder
2 tsp. onion powder
1 Tbsp. Cumin
2 Tbsp. Chili Powder
1 tsp. salt
1 small onion, minced (I used  1 tsp. of Tastefully Simple Onion Onion instead)
1 clove garlic, minced (I used 1 tsp. of Tastefully Simple Garlic Garlic instead)
1/2 tsp. oregano
1/2 tsp. red pepper flakes

Directions: (I used a 2 Quart Crock for this)
Place all of your spices in a bowl and mix it up.

"Crumble" your raw ground beef into your crock.
Sprinkle your seasoning onto your beef and stir it up.

Cook HIGH for 1 hour to "brown" the beef a bit.  Stir it up and break it up a bit.  Then, cook it on LOW for 5-6 hours, or on HIGH for 2.5-3 hours.
I took out quite a bit of grease before serving.  My husband said "But that's where all the flavor is!"  but I'm here to tell you, it was STILL plenty flavorful!

To make these into Walking Tacos, buy little bags of Doritos (any variety) and put out a variety of toppings.
Guest each take a bag of Doritos, open it up and crush up the chips.  They then fill it with meat of their choice and toppings of their choice.  Stir it up, and that's it!

ENJOY!

  3. Did you use any water and if so how much? I so want to make these! But we only eat lean ground beef so there wouldn't be any grease :)

Yes, eating doritos every day would definitely be unhealthy. However, I don't believe that was suggested above in my recipe post. Tacos themselves are not terribly healthy, whether or not you use doritos. So, this recipe is probably not for you.

    3. Actually, from a nutritional standpoint, tacos aren't too bad. They're a good source of protein and fiber, the greens provide some nutrients, and the shell/doritos provide carbs. Yes, it's high in sodium, but your recipe has a lot less than packaged mixes, so I'd say it evens out in the long run. It's really about balance and portion size. Yes, if I ate ten of these, it'd be bad for me; but instead, I eat one and enjoy it. Nicely done!

  11. Thank you for your recipe. I have to make my own seasoning because my daughter has Celiac's. She wants a taco bar for her birthday party and I needed measurements for 6 lbs. of ground beef. Most recipes don't tell you how much to use, they just tell you how to make the seasoning and to use it to taste. I appreciate that you gave a recipe for a specific amount of meat. I just tripled it and everything is ready for the party.

  12. Try this with Fritos -- It's equally as good! Our local festival sells them every summer and uses Fritos -- I was immediately hooked. Thanks for the reminder and idea!

  13. Slow cooked ground beef, WHO KNEW! This recipe is amazing. Tastes like restaurant tacos. Using super lean ground beef so I added 1/2 cup of water mixed with 1/2 teaspoon of Caldo de Tomate bullion (Hispanic aisle at the grocery) and left out the salt. Thanks so much for the recipe.

  15. I would suggest you gently crush the Doritos (or Fritos ... which I prefer) before you cut open the package. Just a little neater.
